Hyperbaric oxygen chambers and decompression chambers are essentially the same thing. From a clinical engineering point of view, they all use a controlled pressure environment to prevent or treat decompression sickness (commonly known as “diving decompression”) through high-pressure oxygen. They just have different “nicknames” in different application scenarios.

In the pressure vessels I have touched, the basic principles of the two are highly consistent. They are essentially air-tight steel or high-strength acrylic containers capable of generating atmospheric pressure above sea level.
They follow Henry’s Law in physics: the amount of gas dissolved in a liquid is proportional to the partial pressure of that gas. When you increase the pressure in the cabin and provide a high concentration of oxygen, the nitrogen bubbles that had previously formed in the diver’s blood and tissues will be forced “back” into the liquid state. This logic, whether you are saving divers or treating patients with chronic wounds, is universal.

HE5000
2.0ATA, Medical grade pressure is suitable to home health, Dimensions: 82 x 65 x 72 inch for 1-3 person using.
HE5000-Plus
2.0ATA, Medical grade pressure is suitable to home health, Dimensions: 102 x 65 x 72 inch for 1-4 person using.
Diamond-100
2.0ATA, Medical grade pressure is suitable to assist in the treatment of disease, diameter 39inch for two adults using.
In the maritime and diving industry, it is used to call it “decompression chamber”.
Deployment environment: These devices are usually located near diving vessels, drilling platforms or deep diving sites.
Prevention and first aid: In addition to rescuing patients with severe decompression sickness, it also has an important function of “surface decompression”. Divers can’t stay in the cold sea any longer and can raise the water ahead of time to complete the remaining decompression procedures in the decompression chamber on deck. For underwater operators, this thing is not only medical equipment, but also the last line of defense to save their lives.

In a hospital setting, we often refer to it as the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Chamber (HBOT) . This definition is much broader.
Clinical application: The cabin in the hospital is not only to deal with nitrogen poisoning, it has a wide range of uses that you can hardly imagine-from difficult to heal diabetic foot ulcers, to acute carbon monoxide poisoning, to radioactive tissue damage, and even severe crush injuries.
Standard of care: Clinical cabins often incorporate complex vital signs monitoring systems. After all, in the hospital, the patient situation we have to deal with is much more complicated than in the diving boat.
If you ask me directly what is the difference between the two hardware, I will tell you: no difference. are essentially the same physical container.
The true boundaries lie in the mission objectives:
If your mission is to rescue divers from a nitrogen crisis on a ship, it’s a decompression chamber.
If your task is to promote wound healing or improve tissue hypoxia by increasing pressure in the hospital, it is a hyperbaric oxygen chamber.

As a specialist in hyperbaric technology and diving safety, I focus on the physics of pressurized environments and their life-saving applications. I wrote this article to clarify the common confusion between decompression and hyperbaric chambers, drawing on the science of Henry’s Law to explain how these identical technologies serve both offshore divers and clinical patients.
